Raymond John Gaffney

? Services for Raymond John Gaffney, 73, Topeka, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka. Private inurnment will be in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mr. Gaffney died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born July 17, 1930, in Springfield, Mass., the son of William and Mary (Levine) Gaffney.

He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Park College in Kansas City, Mo., and a master’s degree in international relations from Boston College.

Mr. Gaffney served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served 21 years before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1969. He was a warden at the Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing from 1970 to 1973 and vice president of Highway Oil in Topeka from 1974 to 1988. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and the Masonic organization.

He married Viola Lawless. She died Aug. 31, 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Allen, Lawrence, and Mary Bowden, Topeka; two sons, Daniel, Lawrence, and Michael, Folsom, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel in Topeka.

The family suggests memorials to Shriners Hospitals for Children, sent in care of the Arab Temple, 1305 S. Kansas Ave., Topeka 66612.
