LHS passed on passing in rout of Olathe South

It’s a safe bet that Olathe South probably was never fooled.

The Lawrence High football team attempted — count ’em –zero passes in its 29-0 victory over O-South Friday at Haskell Stadium.

Zip. Zilch. Nada. Not one.

LHS coach Dirk Wedd said he’d be confident to use the air game when the situation called. It just never did Friday. So why risk it?

While the passing options are there and are effective — notably seniors Drew Cummings and Josh Lawrence — the running game is Lawrence’s bread and butter. Always has been. Probably always will be.

“Everything is set up off of our running,” Wedd said. “We’re going to run until teams can stop it. And recently, teams haven’t been able to stop it.”

Eight Lions contributed to rush for 293 yards on 58 carries, led by junior Jeff Colter garnering 108 yards in nine attempts.

Once, senior quarterback Taylor Parker dropped back in what appeared to be a pass attempt, but ended up scrambling and was sacked.

Regardless, the Lions (2-2) won easily, breaking their two-game losing streak.

And for the inquiring minds, yes, the zero pass attempts ties a world record for fewest attempts in a game. It’s a mark that will surely be duplicated, but never broken.

  • Back in action: Free State High senior Will Malcolm played his first full game of the season Friday against Olathe East, rushing 18 times for 75 yards. He had been set back by an infection in his elbow.

“He’s getting close,” FSHS coach Bob Lisher said. “He’s still a little weak, but he’s probably about 90 percent.”

For the season, Malcolm has 33 carries for 214 yards.

  • Set in stone: The location of the Lions’ Oct. 31 game with Topeka High has been finalized. It will be played in Topeka at Hummer Sports Park.

“We didn’t know which site in Topeka it would be at,” LHS athletic director Ron Commons said. “But their new place is up and ready, and we’ll be there that Friday night.”

  • Dillingham update: Free State senior Dain Dillingham, the city’s top football recruit this season, is still weighing his options as far as where to go to college next year.

Dillingham has received offers from Minnesota and Kansas University and has received strong interest from Kansas State and Missouri. He’s also getting basketball interest from Cornell, though he said he was leaning toward playing football.

“I want to decide pretty soon,” Dillingham said. “Either during football season or right after it.”

  • Up next: Lawrence High will hit the road and take on defending state champ Olathe North (3-1) Friday. Meanwhile, Free State (2-2) will travel to take on Leavenworth, the only winless team in the Sunflower League.
