Police seek suspect in club stabbing

A 28-year-old Lawrence woman suffered a stab wound in a weekend fight at a North Lawrence nightclub.

Police said a 22-year-old woman stabbed the 28-year-old in the abdomen with a knife early Saturday during an argument at Club 508, 508 Locust St. Friends drove the injured woman to Lawrence Memorial Hospital before police arrived at the club, according to a police report.

The suspect and victim are acquaintances, police said, but they hadn’t contacted the suspect as of Monday and had not recovered a weapon.

A Lawrence Memorial Hospital spokeswoman said Monday that she couldn’t release information about the victim.

Female walker reports indecent exposure

A 45-year-old woman told police a man exposed himself to her as she walked near Harvard Road and Grove Drive in west Lawrence.

The woman reported seeing the man standing partially clothed near a street light between 8:40 p.m. and 8:58 p.m. Thursday. She told police she turned to go the other way and heard the man following her. She then started running and heard him running after her.

She said the man chased her for about a block. She ran home and called police, who didn’t find anyone suspicious in the area.

SRS offers chance to talk with secretary

Area residents affected by the state’s welfare budget are invited to attend a “stakeholders’ meeting” at 1:30 p.m. today at the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services’ office in Lawrence, 1901 Del.

During the meeting, SRS Secretary Janet Schalansky will discuss the status of the department’s budget and plans to close several offices and develop alternate ways for consumers to confer with case workers.

Schalansky will be in Topeka. Her comments and listeners’ questions will be heard via speaker phone.

Funds to be raised for fire victims

Paul Davis Restoration and area firefighters will raise money for the Midwest Regional Burn Foundation at the 10th annual Paul Davis Restoration Charity Golf Invitational and Fire Safe House Presentation. Tee-off is at 10 a.m. today at Alvamar Golf and Country Club.

Lawrence firefighters will be at the event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to operate the fire safe house. Firefighters will give a talk about fire safety and let children tour the safety house and a fire truck. The Boys and Girls Club will be at the event at 4 p.m.

The Midwest Regional Burn Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that assists the recovery and rehabilitation of burn victims. It supports research and education to prevent fires and burn injuries.
