Lions third, Firebirds seventh at Eagle Bend

City squads finally finish rain-delayed invitational

Finally. A beautiful day for a girls golf tournament in Lawrence.

After the Eagle Bend Invitational was postponed by rain Sept. 11 and the Lawrence Invitational was shortened by rain Thursday, both city squads were no doubt relieved to see sunny skies Monday for the rescheduled, nine-hole Eagle Bend invite.

“With the weather this time of year,” Lawrence High coach Mike Lewis said, “you’ve got to take what you can get.”

LHS took third, and Free State took seventh in the 10-team tournament Monday. The Lions were led by two individual medalists — Sydney Wilson, who fired a 44 and took sixth, and Whitney Juneau, who took eighth with a 47.

“I was happy with my first seven holes,” said Juneau, a junior. “I lost my concentration after that. I think I saw the barn door open and just didn’t focus.”

Wilson is still juggling volleyball and golf this fall, and Lewis said she was just starting to get into a golf rhythm.

Regardless, Lewis is satisfied knowing his top spots are in good hands.

“Sydney and Whitney have really emerged as our top two golfers,” Lewis said. “Our three through six is really up for grabs. I hope we can shave some strokes in the next couple of weeks, before league and regionals.”

Overall, Lawrence finished with 202 strokes. Free State had 234, led by Liz Brandt, who fired a 53.

Free State golfer Amanda Enneking had a blast of wind restyle her hair as she teed off at the Eagle Bend Invitational. The Firebirds finished seventh in the team standings Monday at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

Free State beat Blue Valley Northwest, Shawnee Mission East and Olathe North. BV Northwest didn’t bring a complete team.

“I know we can play better,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said. “Right now, we’re at a stage where we’re hurting ourselves with penalty strokes, not keeping the ball in play — stuff the average golfer deals with on weekends.”

The tournament featured tough competition in team champ Olathe East, which featured a phenomenal trio of Jaci Hiatt, Karrah Clay and Krista Nelson. The three took up all but one of the top four individual placings; Hiatt won the individual title by firing a 38.

SM South was second in the team standings.

Despite the postponement from two weeks ago, Hershiser was pleased to see only one team that had originally planned to participate — Blue Valley West — backed out when the event was rescheduled.

“The tournament has grown over the years,” Hershiser said. “We keep getting more teams and more players. Whether it’s liking the competition or liking the course or whatever, I’m glad it’s becoming popular.”
