KU women fourth in Michigan event

East Lansing, Mich. — Kansas University’s women’s golf team finished fourth with total score of 937 Sunday at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.

The Jayhawks shot scores of 320, 304 and 313 on the 6,236-yard, par-72 Forest Akers West Golf Course.

Host Michigan State won the tournament with a total score of 901, followed by Kent State (926) and Arkansas (934).

“This was a huge day for our team,” KU coach Megan Menzel said. “The team effort was wonderful with great work from each player.”

Sophomore Tiffany Woods led the Jayhawks with a final score of 232, finishing tied for 15th.

Kansas Invitational opens today at Alvamar

There will be new champions crowned Tuesday at the Kansas Invitational golf tournament at Alvamar.

Defending team champion Baylor — and BU’s Ryan Baca, who took last year’s individual title — will not be participating in the 15-team, 54-hole tournament that begins at 8 a.m. today with a shotgun start. The two-day tourney will conclude with 18 holes Tuesday.

Kansas University, which took second last season at the Invitational, is coming off a 12th-place finish at The Ridges Intercollegiate.

KU coach Ross Randall said his team was looking forward to this week’s home-course debut.

“We have a good field of teams coming to this year’s tournament,” Randall said. “Houston and Louisville are both strong teams that will be new to the Kansas Invitational, and there are also a few local Big 12 teams participating. We are looking forward to hosting the tournament.”

Other teams participating include Drake, Iowa State, Louisville, UMKC, Nebraska and Wichita State.
