Time right for Bucs’ win at Atlanta

Vick's absense helpful

The Tampa Bay Bucs managed to get two field-goal attempts and an extra point blocked last week and lost to Carolina in overtime.

That puts the Super Bowl champs among 11 of the 12 playoff teams from last season that already have lost after just two games.

This week, the Bucs go to Atlanta to play a team clearly wounded by the loss of Michael Vick, out with a broken leg.

Replacement Doug Johnson was mediocre last week as the Falcons blew a 17-point lead at home and lost, 33-31, to Washington.

Vick’s probably gone for another month.

“It doesn’t sound good,” coach Dan Reeves said. “He’s going to have to make a miraculous recovery in the next few weeks.”

Tampa Bay’s recovery is easier — fix special teams.

The defending NFL champions, 31/2-point favorites this week, have yet to allow a touchdown. They shut out the Eagles on the road, then held Carolina to four field goals in nearly five quarters.

But they couldn’t make an extra point after scoring on the final play of regulation.

As usual, the Bucs’ offense isn’t doing much — just 26 points in two games, albeit against two very good defenses.

But it’s enough.

BUCS, 19-10

Oakland (plus 5) at Denver (Monday night)

Jake Plummer’s separated right shoulder is better, although he remains a question mark. In any case, Steve Beuerlein is a capable backup.

BRONCOS, 24-20

Buffalo (plus 3) at Miami

An important early season NFL matchup that’s a “prove it” game for the Bills.

DOLPHINS, 20-19

St. Louis (plus 3) at Seattle

Kurt Warner’s healthy, but Marc Bulger is the Rams’ QB. The Seahawks are good.

SEAHAWKS, 24-20

New York Giants (plus 2 1/2) at Washington

The Redskins should be a heavier favorite. The Giants lost in overtime Monday night and have a questionable OL, even if Luke Petitgout comes back.

But the Redskins are due to lose.

GIANTS, 31-27

Kansas City (minus 7 1/2) at Houston

Can the Chiefs play on the road the way they’ve played at home?

In Houston, they can.

CHIEFS, 21-7

New Orleans (plus 4 1/2) at Tennessee

Steve McNair’s dislocated finger probably won’t keep him out.

TITANS, 29-17

New York Jets (plus 6 1/2) at New England

New England turned it on in Philly. The Jets turned it off when Chad Pennington went down.

PATRIOTS, 30-10

Jacksonville (plus 7 1/2) at Indianapolis

The Colts are the only playoff team from last season to start 2-0. Make it 3-0.

COLTS, 33-19

Pittsburgh (minus 4 1/2) at Cincinnati

The Bengals sometimes beat the Steelers. It’s time for Marvin Lewis’ first win.

BENGALS, 23-22

Minnesota (minus 3 1/2) at Detroit

The NFC North is horrible.

VIKINGS, 28-20

Cleveland (plus 7) at San Francisco

Maybe Garrison Hearst or Kevan Barlow will run for 296 yards against the soft Browns’ defense.

49ERS, 37-16

Green Bay (minus 7 1/2) at Arizona

Only a touchdown?

PACKERS, 41-10

Baltimore (pick ’em) at San Diego

The Chargers are surrendering an average of 164 yards on the ground. Jamal Lewis should have a big game again.

RAVENS, 19-13

LAST WEEK: 6-9-1 (spread); 11-5 (straight up)

17-14-1 (spread), 22-10 (straight up)
