KU cross country first, second at invite

Topeka -- Kansas University's men's and women's cross country teams finished first and second Saturday at the Kansas State Wildcat Invitational.

KU freshman Benson Chesang took second in a time of 20:19.40 behind only his brother, K-State's Matthew Chesang, who finished in 20:19.30. .

The top Jayhawk women's finisher was senior Paige Higgins, placing fifth in 14:57.70.


Valencia second at Omaha meet

Omaha, Neb. -- Free State High sophomore Alysha Valencia finished second in a time of 15:31 Saturday at the Millard South Invitational, leading the Firebirds to a seventh-place finish.

The Free State boys squad's top finisher was Nick Squier at 12th in 17:18, but the Firebirds finished third overall in the team standings.

LHS earns pair of fifths

Topeka -- Lawrence High's boys and girls cross country teams each finished fifth Saturday at the Topeka West Invitational. Megan Johnson placed sixth in 15:59.2, and Drew Vogel was in 14th place after a time of 17:26.7.

FSHS tennis third at Marysville meet

Marysville -- Free State High's No. 1 doubles tandem of Ellie Ott and Brenna Spurgeon went 3-1 for first place, leading the Firebirds' girls tennis team to a third-place finish Saturday at the Marysville Invitational.

Kristen Bushouse went 2-2 and took third at No. 1 singles, Jamie McGovern was 3-1 and second at No. 2 singles, and Erin Byrnes and Amanda Zimmerschied were 3-1 and second in No. 2 doubles.

Ottawa falls to MANU

Ottawa -- Ottawa University nearly erased a 21-point deficit with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but MidAmerica Nazarene hung on for a 34-27 win Saturday over the Braves.

Jayhawks golf 12th

Jonesborough, Tenn. -- The Kansas University men's golf squad was in 12th place at the Ridges Intercollegiate when darkness postponed Saturday's second round.
