Winter wheat and barley producers in Kansas have until Sept. 30 to sign up for federally subsidized crop insurance.

Kansas farmers were paid nearly $447 million in crop insurance indemnities for last year’s crop losses. Nationwide, crop insurance paid out more than $4 billion for losses suffered in 2002. For the first time, crop insurance surpassed federal disaster programs to become the largest part of the nation’s safety net for farmers.

Both wheat and barley can be insured with the traditional Multiple Peril Crop Insurance. Winter wheat also can be insured with Crop Revenue Coverage, Group Risk Plan, Revenue Assurance and Income Protection.

Not all crops or all types of policies are available in every county. To sign up for crop insurance or to make changes to existing policies, producers must contact a private crop insurance agent before the Sept. 30 deadline.
