Late TD pass propels Kaws

Tongie, SFT each rally for late wins

? Things did not look promising for Perry-Lecompton’s football team with three minutes left in Friday’s Kaw Valley League battle against Basehor-Linwood.

“It was a tough situation,” coach Mike Paramore said of what faced the Kaws when Basehor-Linwood’s Peter Brown returned an interception for 51 yards and a score, giving the Bobcats a five-point lead with just 3:06 left.

“The kids could have folded right there, but I saw it in their eyes, they weren’t going to do that. They were going to find a way to come back and win.”

The Kaws scored on their next possession — a 13-yard pass play from David Foltz to Mitch McPherson with 1:53 left — en route to a 22-19 victory on their home field.

“It’s overwhelming,” Paramore said of the victory.

McPherson gained 84 yards on 19 carries, scoring on the 13-yard pass and a two-yard run. He also had two interceptions at cornerback and 155 return yards, plus a two-point run following the Kaws’ final TD.

Foltz completed 10 of 17 passes for 120 yards and two TDs with the one interception. Basehor-Linwood’s Tyler Dowdall had 22 rushes for 166 yards.

“Mitch was huge. He played great,” Paramore said.

Perry-Lecompton (1-1) travels Friday to Leavenworth Immaculata.

Carbondale — Santa Fe Trail used the brother combination of Shively to Shively to claim a narrow victory at the Chargers’ field.

Brian Shively connected with Jay Shively on a 45-yard pass with 1:31 left to overcome Immac, which scored on a seven-yard pass play at 1:48.

“It was a heart-stopper, to say the least,” SFT coach Dave Watkins said. “It’s a good win. We’re still young. We don’t have a lot of varsity experience. To get down late and make a play to win, that’s a nice job. They fought hard. They could have easily folded and quit. They didn’t.”

A.J. Shelton had an 84-yard punt return and Jake Marquart a 69-yard run for the Chargers.

Ottawa — Ottawa High quarterback Gabe Sheffield threw four touchdown passes, leading the Cyclones to a rout of Kansas City Ward.

Matt Leecy caught two TD passes and Jason Houston and Will Baldwin each had one as the Cyclones jumped to a 36-0 lead after the third quarter.

Vashon Perryman and Dom Nation added rushing touchdowns for Ottawa (2-0), and Cyclones coach Pat Boeh was understandably pleased with the offensive explosion.

“It’s normally a very tight game with Ward,” he said.

“We beat a high-quality opponent. It was a total team effort on both sides of the ball.”

Boeh said he knew Sheffield was capable of big numbers, but a four-touchdown performance was icing on the cake.

“He spread it around,” Boeh said. “He really had a great night finding his open receivers.”

Ward dropped to 0-2.
