Dole events protester to stand trial Nov. 24

A 19-year-old Lawrence man accused of battery of a police officer during a protest outside the Holidome is scheduled to stand trial in late November.

Wesley R. Teal appeared in Douglas County District Court Thursday afternoon with his attorney.

He’s one of several people facing charges stemming from a protest July 21 at one of the events that were part of the dedication of the Dole Institute of Politics.

Judge Paula Martin scheduled a one-day jury trial for Nov. 24.

J-W staffers to weigh in on ‘Kansas Week’ panel

Education spending, local credit card controversies and a debate about prison sentences are on the agenda for this week’s edition of “Kansas Week,” airing at 8:30 tonight on KTWU, Channel 11.

Kansas journalists scheduled to appear include:

  • Ann Gardner, editorial page editor of the Lawrence Journal-World;
  • Dave Ranney, Lawrence Journal-World reporter;
  • Greg Halling, managing editor of the Hutchinson News;

Dance company sets auditions for show

Auditions for an upcoming restaging of a work by choreographer Jose Limón by the University Dance Company at Kansas University will be Saturday.

Auditions are open to advanced modern dancers and will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in 242 Robinson Center at KU.

Sarah Stackhouse, who is internationally known for restaging Limón works, will remount Limón’s “Missa Brevis,” which will be performed at the company’s fall concert Nov. 21-22.

Army Reserve unit back from deployment

Manhattan — The Army Reserve’s 531st Transportation Detachment will return home today after being deployed since March to a Central Command region overseas.

Central Command is overseeing the U.S. military in the Middle East, including units in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 531st Transportation Detachment of 10 soldiers will have a return ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Army Reserve Training Center in Manhattan.

The 531st is a movement control team, which helps move cargo and personnel.
