Depp calls U.S. ‘dumb puppy’

Berlin — Actor Johnny Depp likened the United States to a “dumb puppy that has big teeth” in an interview published Wednesday, ridiculing Washington’s confrontation with France, where he lives, about the war in Iraq.

“America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth — that can bite and hurt you, aggressive,” Depp told the German magazine Stern.

Depp recalled that French fries were renamed “Freedom fries” in the House cafeteria on Capitol Hill at the height of U.S. anger over France’s refusal to back the administration of President Bush over the war in Iraq.

“Nothing made me happier than when I read that — grown men and grown women in positions of power in the United States government,” Depp said. “I was ecstatic because they revealed themselves as idiots.”

J. Lo wedding date set

New York City — Friends of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck say the glamour couple plan to get married Sept. 14, ignoring the notion of “never on Sunday,” reports The New York Daily News.

The wedding will take place near Santa Barbara, Calif., on a hillside estate, “maybe at a winery,” a source tells Us Weekly.

The affair will be catered by Santa Barbara’s Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel, where J.Lo, 33, and Affleck, 31, dined about two weeks ago.

The guest list is reported to include Matt Damon, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry and Alec Baldwin; and it’s reported Ben has selected his brother, Casey Affleck, for best man duties.

Hepburn property for sale

Hartford, Conn.– The Old Saybrook waterfront estate of the late Katharine Hepburn is going on sale with an initial asking price of $12 million.

Hepburn’s executors wrote a letter two weeks ago to neighbors of the four-time Academy Award-winning actress, informing them that the property would be on the market soon. As part of a long-held custom in the town’s Fenwick section, where Hepburn’s home is, neighbors are told first when a property will be sold and asked to submit offers if they are interested.

Hepburn, who’d been in failing health the past few years, died June 29 at the Fenwick home. She was 96.
