Mother, child believed to be victims of fire

Authorities have recovered the bodies of a woman and a child from a Rossville home that was destroyed by fire, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Neither of the victims of Sunday afternoon’s blaze has been identified, but the Sheriff’s Office said they were believed to be Lila Wolc, 46, and her 3-year-old son, Blake.

Wolc, her son and her husband, Brian, lived in the home that burned. Brian Wolc was at work when the home caught fire, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office continued to investigate.

Police investigate double homicide

Two men were fatally wounded after they apparently shot each other on a street in a residential area, police said Monday.

After the early-morning shooting Sunday, the men were transported to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Police identified the men as Charleton Murphy, 19, and Jason Clark, 20, both of Kansas City, Kan.

Police did not immediately release any other details.

Kansas boasts four Blue Ribbon Schools

Four Kansas schools will be honored this week in Washington, D.C., for posting high test scores.

The Blue Ribbon School award is given to schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments or have a large percentage of disadvantaged students who show dramatic improvement on assessment scores.

The Kansas schools to be honored are: Ellinwood Grade School in Ellinwood, the Custer Hill Elementary School at Fort Riley, Mill Creek Elementary School in Lenexa, and Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kansas City.

About 240 schools nationwide will be honored.
