ICaN to train volunteers to help senior citizens

Agency: Interfaith Caring Neighbors

Contact: 749-2005

ICaN will have a one-hour training session at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for volunteers interested in helping senior citizens maintain their independence. ICaN volunteers must be able to commit about an hour a week to an elderly person as a friendly visitor or a grocery shopper. Handyperson tasks also are available, but are sporadic and only require the ability to perform the specific task. These include tasks such as changing light bulbs, hanging pictures, installing grab bars and yard work. ICaN has been helping Lawrence and Eudora senior citizens since 1995. The number of clients served has doubled in the last year, and the organization needs volunteers to help with the increased work load. Call the number above to reserve a space at training or to get more information.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Douglas County Senior Meals program needs a volunteer at the Babcock Place meal site. The volunteer will help package lunches for home delivery and assist with serving those who dine at the site. Volunteers are asked to make a regular commitment, which may be flexibly arranged to fit their schedules. For more information, call Art Lamb at 842-6976.
  • The Community Drop-in Center is looking for volunteers for its Chocolate and Tea fund-raising event Nov. 9. Volunteers to help clean up from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. are particularly needed. The Community Drop-in Center provides a warm place for people who are homeless to drop in from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. For more information, call Tami Clark at 832-8864.
  • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center extends thanks to the dozens of volunteers who helped Saturday on Make A Difference Day. By working at local service agencies, out in the environment and in the homes of senior citizens and people with disabilities, these volunteers helped the Lawrence community. For information about future days of service or volunteer opportunities for groups and individuals, contact the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, a service of the United Way of Douglas County, 2518 Ridge Court, Room 104, at 865-5030 or rhvc@ixks.com. Opportunities also are online at www.rhvc.org.
