More Boeing workers land layoff notices

? Boeing Wichita laid off 75 commercial aircraft workers Friday in what company officials said was the last round of job cuts for the year.

Friday also was the last day on the payroll for 44 employees who received lay off notices earlier this year.

“On the part of the individuals leaving or getting layoff notices, it is not good news — especially before a holiday,” said Boeing spokesman Dick Ziegler. “We are going to try to do the best by them as we can.”

Ziegler said the Wichita plant had reason to be cautiously optimistic because of the prospect of it securing more military contracts.

On Thursday, leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee reached agreement on a proposal to lease 20 Boeing 767 planes as refueling tankers and buy 80 more in a standard purchase. The fuselages of the 767 tankers are being built in Boeing’s widebody plant in Everett, Wash., and will be flown to Wichita to be reconfigured.
