Security reviewed at jail after hostage incident

Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp has ordered an immediate review of security procedures at Douglas County Jail after an inmate took a jail nurse hostage Thursday night.

Trapp said the 31-year-old woman, who works for the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, was distributing medication to an inmate in the maximum security pod at about 8:45 p.m.

Trapp said a male inmate allegedly grabbed the nurse, holding her hostage, while demanding his release from jail. An on-duty supervisor was eventually able to convince the inmate to let the woman go.

“At about 9:16 p.m., about 30 minutes later, the inmate did release the nurse unharmed, and the inmate was, of course, immediately taken back to his cell and confined,” Trapp said.

The sheriff is not releasing the inmate’s name since the investigation is on-going. A complete report on the incident will be forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s office, and the inmate could face additional criminal charges.

Visiting Nurses Association Director Jan Jenkins said the nurse is doing fine and this incident will not keep her from continuing her work at the Douglas County Jail.
