Lawrence march, rally to protest war in Iraq

Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice will play host to a march and rally Saturday morning.

Marchers will gather at 10:15 a.m. at Seventh and Kentucky streets. The march will proceed along Massachusetts Street to South Park. The rally will feature speakers and music.

Both events are part of a national “Where Have All the Reasons Gone?” protest of the Bush administration’s linking Sept. 11 and the war in Iraq.

Douglas County D.A. to lead statewide group

Douglas County Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney soon will head up a statewide organization of prosecutors.

Kenney in December will begin serving a one-year term as vice president of the Kansas County and District Attorney’s Assn. After that, she’ll take over as the organization’s president.

She was the group’s secretary/treasurer for the past year.

The organization has roughly 300 members. Its goal is to “promote, improve and facilitate the administration of justice in the state of Kansas.”

Water officials to gather for conference at KU

Water officials from across the state will be at Kansas University today for a conference on the role of water in the state’s economy.

Organized by KU’s Policy Research Institute and Continuing Education, the conference begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Speakers include:

  • KU history professor Donald Worster on “The Waters of Kansas, Past and Present.”
  • Earl Lewis, manager of the hydrology and evaluation unit of the Kansas Water Office, on “Development to Management: The Changing Water Supply and Policy of Kansas”
  • David Traster, special counsel with Foulston Siefkin law firm in Wichita, on “Business as Usual or a New Paradigm: Do We Need a Fundamental Change?”
