Melvin Shorter

Services for Melvin Shorter, 64, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Victory Bible Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Shorter died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Olathe Medical Center.

He was born April 2, 1939, in Hollandale, Miss., the son of Collins and Mary McDonald Shorter. He moved to Lawrence from Hollandale in 1963.

Mr. Shorter was a chemical operator at Farmland Industries until he retired in 1998. He had worked for Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and the city of Lawrence. He was a member of Community Church of God.

He married Rosie Clark on Feb. 9, 1961, in Hollandale. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Linda Hunter and Odessa Shorter, both of Lawrence, Delorise Brown, Beatrice, Neb., and Sandra Akpovona, Topeka; a son, Melvin, Tulsa, Okla.; four brothers, Quincy, Chicago, Willie, St. Louis, and Collins Jr. and Larry, both of Lawrence; a sister, Lillie Davis, Lawrence; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Bryan O., died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the mortuary.
