The Lawrence High volleyball team Wednesday was forced to forfeit its three victories from Tuesday’s quadrangular, the Lions’ final regular-season event.

The self-imposed forfeit came after the Lions learned they had used an ineligible player in Tuesday’s matches.

“We used a player in too many days of competition,” LHS athletic director Ron Commons said.

The Lions had defeated Topeka West, Emporia and Leavenworth Immaculata Monday at Lawrence High, but upon learning of their error, immediately notified the Kansas State High School Activities Assn., as well as the coaches of all three schools.

The mix-up was quickly resolved because information for sub-state tournaments was turned in Wednesday, and seeding depended solely on win-loss record of a particular team.

It had an impact — with the forfeited win, Immaculata (27-7) was given the top seed for its 2A sub-state at McLouth. Had its loss to Lawrence stood, Immaculata would’ve been a No. 2 seed.

For the Lions, instead of improving to 15-21, they dropped to 12-24.

Commons could not identify who the player was.

The Lions are now preparing for Class 6A sub-state action. Both Lawrence and Free State will play Saturday at Olathe East. The top two teams out of sub-state advance to the state tournament in Topeka that begins Oct. 31.
