Class: Junior

Height: 5-8. Weight: 155.

Position: Running back/defensive back

The game: A no-brainer. Colter showed his playmaking abilities in all three phases of the game Friday against Washburn Rural. On offense, he had six carries for 96 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown run. On defense, he picked off a Junior Blues pass and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown. And on special teams, he returned a punt 61 yards for yet another score, helping Lawrence High beat Washburn Rural, 56-12. The Lions take a four-game winning streak into their Friday showdown with Free State.

Comment: “Jeff’s an outstanding football player,” LHS coach Dirk Wedd said. “He lights the ignition for this team. He’s a huge key for us.”

Jason Houston

Ottawa

Class: Senior

Height: 5-10. Weight: 170.

Position: Running back

The game: Houston made sure Ottawa got off on the right foot in district play Friday, rushing for 180 yards on 19 carries with five touchdowns. He also added a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown and had more than 160 return yards on the night. Houston had touchdown runs of 1, 21, 47, 18 and 5 Friday, helping Ottawa roll past Anderson County, 51-26, and improve to 6-1 this season. Houston has 16 touchdowns this season.

Comment: “You can look at the scoring touchdowns and what he’s doing running the ball, catching the ball and on special teams,” Ottawa coach Pat Boeh said, “and you see that he’s just a phenomenal athlete that had quite a game on Friday.”
