Angelone shines in FSHS soccer loss

? Joel Angelone’s hat trick wasn’t enough for Free State High’s soccer team Monday in a 4-3 loss to Olathe East.

East (11-3) took a 3-0 lead before Angelone scored a goal late in the first half.

The Hawks extended their lead to 4-1 in the second half before Free State (6-6-2) rallied.

“With about 25 minutes left, we got a sense of urgency and got a couple of goals,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said. “We got good pressure on their goal, but were unable to get an equalizer.”

Angelone’s first two goals were unassisted, and Jake Schneider assisted on the third. Angelone, a senior, has 16 goals this season.

“It was a big game for Joel,” Pendleton said. “He’s been in a little bit of a slump. He attacked with speed and intensity, and it created a lot of chances.”

Pendleton also cited midfielder Scott Schumaker and defender Aaron Trent for their play.

Free State will play host to Olathe North at 4 p.m. today.
