People power

We sometimes forget that perhaps our greatest business asset is the quality of our work force.

A recurring theme during the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Commerce awards presentations Friday was praise for the quality of the local work force.

Without exception, every executive who went to the front to accept an award, praised the employees that make their companies click. The owner of a small local business recognized the employee whom he described as both his “right and left arms.” An official of a large company based outside Kansas said the quality of the workers they were able to hire was a key component of its Lawrence operation’s success.

An owner of one local technology business specifically noted the importance of being located close to Kansas University. Without the proximity to KU, he said, it would be difficult to hire people with the combination of high-tech skills and Midwestern work ethic.

All of the Friday comments echo the sentiment of Amarr Garage Doors’ officials last week when they announced their desire to expand their facility in the East Hill Business Park. A key consideration was their success in hiring qualified workers in Lawrence.

It was a good reminder to us all. When we look at all Lawrence has to offer, we look at various attributes, but we often overlook what may be our greatest asset: our people.
