Haskell, Bacone each seek spark

? Haskell Indian Nations University’s football team hopes to bounce back from a disappointing overtime loss today.

So does Bacone College.

Kickoff for the Central States Football League clash between the Fightin’ Indians and the Warriors will be at 7 p.m. at Bacone’s stadium.

While Haskell was suffering a 13-10 overtime loss to Peru State in Lawrence Saturday, the Warriors were in Goodwell, Okla., where they dropped a 42-41 overtime decision to Panhandle State.

Bacone, 3-3 and 1-0 in the CSFL, boasts the league’s most prolific passing offense. Junior quarterback Clay Waggle leads the league in passing yards (235.3 per game) and in touchdown passes (15). Waggle has thrown 226 passes and had only four intercepted.

Haskell, 2-4 and 0-3 in the CSFL, has the league’s second-leading rusher in freshman Chad Murphy, who is averaging 92.0 yards a game.

Haskell’s strength, however, has been its defense. The Indians lead the league in that category, surrendering only 260.8 yards per game. The Tribe has allowed a league-low 13 touchdowns.

Haskell hasn’t been able to defeat Bacone in two previous tries. The Warriors won last year’s game, 40-0, after posting a 48-20 decision in 2001.

HINU was scheduled to play Dallas University Oct. 25, but the Texas school dropped football so the Indians will be idle next weekend.

After tonight, HINU has games at Panhandle State Nov. 1 and Langston Nov. 15.

Culver-Stockton on tap for BU: Baker University also returns to the gridiron tonight against Culver-Stockton at 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium.

The Wildcats (2-3) will try to return to the .500 mark following a 20-13 victory at Avila two weeks ago and a bye last week.

That won’t be easy, as Culver-Stockton (3-3) has lost two straight but averaged 33 points per game during that span.

Running back D.J. Johnson leads Culver-Stockton’s offensive attack with 678 yards rushing. Quarterback Thomas Barnes provides the passing balance for an offense that averages 381 yards per game.

That’s well ahead of Baker, which is averaging just over 300 yards per game.
