  • Jessica Fitzgerald, Holton, and Eric Jamison, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Corbin Michael Jamison, born Sept. 10, 2003, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.
    Grandparents are Randy and Kris Jamison, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Ken and Sue Lane, Duncan, Okla., and Betty McCanna, Amarillo, Texas.
  • Sara and David Sackman, Cincinnati, announce the birth of a daughter, Gretchen Nicole Sackman, born Sept. 3, 2003, at Mercy Hospital-Anderson in Anderson Township, Ohio. She has a sister, Haley, 3.
    Maternal grandparents are Fred and Sally Johnson, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Dwayne and Karen Sackman, Madison, Wis. Great-grandparents are Jim Clark, Topeka; Erma Borland, Lakewood, Calif.; Dale and Vera Cochran, Topeka; and Gaylen and Betty Sackman, Topeka.
  • Jennifer Engle recently pledged Kappa Alpha Theta at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Engle, a 2003 graduate of Free State High School, is the daughter of Cary and Susan Engle, Lawrence.
  • Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, a senior at Syracuse University, received the Distinguished Military Student Award for significant academic and military accomplishments.
    Washburn participated in the Goon Squad in August as part of Syracuse Welcome 2003, the university’s orientation week for new students. The Goon Squad consists of upperclassmen who assist new students and their parents as they move into residence halls.
  • Oskaloosa High School announces the Students of the Month for October. They are Sarah Dissinger, Terra Farmer, Shawn Stottlemire and Emma Willis, all juniors. They received the award for their positive contributions in the school and community.
  • A retirement reception for Lois Hart will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Union Pacific Depot in North Lawrence. Lois is retiring from Kmart after 29 years. She mostly worked at the service desk. After the Lawrence store closed, she worked in north Topeka until retirement.
