FSHS soccer falls to SM South, 1-0

Overland Park — Free State High’s soccer team fell to Shawnee MIssion South, 1-0, Monday.

The game was called with 35 minutes remaining because of lightning.

“It was clear I didn’t have my team prepared to play,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “Shawnee Mission South was much more excited to be there.”

Firebird goaltender Aaron Williams had several saves in the first half.

“You’d like to think you’d come back and tie the game, but the way it was going it might result in a four- or five-goal loss,” Pendleton said of what might have happened had the game not been called. “We didn’t have consistent effort from everybody on the team today.”

The Firebirds (6-4-2) will play host to SM West at 4 p.m. today. West is undefeated and the top-ranked team in the state. SM South improved to 3-8.

Firebirds take fifth at golf regionals

Topeka — The Free State High girls golf team took fifth place in Class 6A regional action Monday at Lake Shawnee, firing a 487 and failing to qualify for the state meet.

Manhattan (334) and Topeka Washburn Rural (340) were the top two teams at the regional, both earning a team berth in the state meet Monday.

“It was a good effort considering none of our players have ever been in a regional tournament before,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said. “It was all new to them.”

Junior Kristen Kearns paced the Firebirds, shooting a 113. Junior Liz Brandt (118), sophomore Ashley Robinson (127) and junior Erin Faulconer (129) rounded out the Free State lineup.
