LHS inducts alumni into hall of honor

Three more names were added to Lawrence High School’s Hall of Honor during an induction ceremony Sunday.

About 75 people gathered in the high school’s commons area for the annual event honoring Dr. Kris Sperry, Mary Demeritt Gordon and Danny Manning.

Sperry, a 1971 graduate of LHS, is a forensic pathologist and the chief medical examiner for the state of Georgia. He lives in Sharpsburg, Ga. In 2002 he led the state’s forensic investigation into the discovery of hundreds of bodies dumped behind a crematory outside Noble, Ga.

Gordon graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1951. She devoted her career to teaching visually impaired students and is a member of the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame.

Manning led the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship in 1988 and had a long NBA career. This year he joined the coaching staff of the Kansas University men’s basketball team. He graduated from LHS in 1984.

Since 1994, the alumni association has annually recognized outstanding graduates who achieved success in their lives and professions, as well as several nongraduates who contributed to the success of Liberty Memorial or LHS.
