Governor to honor Lawrence artists

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will present the 2003 Governor’s Arts Awards during a ceremony Saturday at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

Sculptor Jim Brothers and arts patron Marilyn Dobski, both of Lawrence, will be among those honored at the event.

Brothers, who received an individual artist award, is known for his figurative, documentary bronzes, which often portray Kansans and other Americans in contemporary or historic settings. He was chief sculptor of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va.

Dobski, who was honored as an individual patron, served five years as president and four years as vice president of the Lawrence Arts Center’s board of directors. She also served on the building project committee while the new 40,000-square-foot center at 940 N.H. was planned and constructed. Dobski co-chaired a private fund drive, to which she and her husband gave a major gift.
