Boy Scout Troop 53, chartered to First Christian Church of Lawrence, had a Court of Honor Sept. 22. The following Scouts received rank awards: Jacob Nissen, Tenderfoot; Greg Muetz, Tenderfoot; Justin Saathoff, Tenderfoot and 2nd Class; Tom Stanley, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class; Ethan Yocum, Tenderfoot; John Chumbley, 2nd Class and 1st Class; Ryan Pennington, 2nd Class and 1st Class; Jonathan King, 1st Class; Evan Mielke, 1st Class; Zak Stremel, 1st Class; Jordan Yulich, 1st Class; Chance Steele, Star; Nathan Ideus, Star; Nick Chance, Star; Joey Berger, Star; and Tim Muetz, Life.

Jimmy Kelley, Hamilton Lewis, Andrew Schmidt, Julian Spangler, Brian Teefey and Brett Yulich were recognized for attending Summer Canoe Base, while Michael Bennett, Chris Berger, Joey Berger, Nick Chance, John Chumbley, Devon Griffin, Aaron Ideus, Nathan Ideus, Jonathan King, Stephen May, Evan Mielke, Greg Muetz, Tim Muetz, Jacob Nissen, Ryan Pennington, Justin Saathoff, Zach Schmidt, Tom Stanley, Connor Stremel, Zak Stremel, Aaron Tilden, Alex Webster, Ethan Yocum and Jordan Yulich were recognized for attending Camp Alexander during the previous summer. Alex Webster was installed as the new senior patrol leader.

  • Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, had its semiannual Court of Honor on Sept. 30.

In addition to these Scouts, the following Scouts received one or more merit badges or other awards: Mark Ashley, Timothy Barta, Jack Berkowitz, Bill Berkowitz, Jake Brown, Michael Davidson, Justin Deaver, Rich DiBenedetto, Dwayne LaForce, David Long, Mason McCurdy, Ian O’Connor, Andres Ramos, Henry Reiske, Todd Roberts, Will Sharp, Peter Tuttle, Ethan Vogelsang and Nathan Wycoff. Wayne Deaver received a plaque for his service as troop Scoutmaster.

Troop 52 had a training hike Oct. 4 on the Rimrock trail at Camp Naish. Scouts who participated were Justin Deaver, Henry Reiske, Todd Roberts, Joel Morrison, Pete Tuttle, Cyril Cook, Brandon Mailand and Will Sharp. Adults who attended were Don Cook, Wayne Deaver, Bob Anderson, Herb Tuttle, Glen Sharp and Bruce Wagner.

  • Venturing Crew 2691, chartered to Lawrence Wesleyan Church, had its first Court of Honor Oct. 5. Crew 2691 was organized in 1998. Wes Cook, Will Sharp, Pete Tuttle, Vic Tuttle and Josh Spradlin received the Ranger Award. Will Sharp, Thomas Fulbright, Pete Tuttle, Wes Cook and Cameron Hershiser received the Bronze Award for outdoors and sports activities. Bill Berkowitz, Vic Tuttle, Josh Spradlin, Westley Hinkle, Michael Ornburn and Tristan Wagner received the Bronze Award for outdoor activities. Justin Deaver received the Bronze Award for sports and religious activities. These Scouts and Jack Berkowitz, Philip Gilreath, Paul Bireta, Zeke Turner and Evan Tedlock received the 50-miler Award.

Bob Anderson, Phil Cook, Glen Sharp, Herb Tuttle, Rowley Tedlock and Bruce Wagner also received the 50-miler award as adult leaders.

  • First-year Webelos from Cub Scout Pack 3462, chartered to Langston Hughes School, toured the KLWN radio station on Oct. 2 as part of their communications badge. Cubs who attended were Robby Andrews, Dylan Orth, Josh Ideus, Dawson Conway, Zach Bradford, Nicholas Shaheed, Tanner Click, Cadden Merz and B.J. Hambleton. Jon Thomas accompanied them as an adult leader.
  • Cub Scout Pack 3370, chartered to Deerfield PTA, sponsored a Wolf Den outing Oct. 4 to the Midland Railway. The Wolf Scouts toured the depot in Baldwin and then boarded the train for the 30-minute ride to Norwood. While stopped at Norwood, the Scouts were given a demonstration of how a locomotive is coupled and uncoupled and received a few tips on track safety. The boys also inspected some new track that is being constructed by various Boy Scout troops from the area. During the return trip to Baldwin, many of the Scouts toured the newly renovated 1916 vintage combination passenger coach and baggage car.

Wolf Den members who participated were John Bennett, Reid Buckingham, Logan Cherland, Hunter Dedloff, Michael Edman, Stephen Fulton, Adam Gowen, Taylor Grob, Alexander Houston, Michael Thompson and Lucas Werner. They were accompanied by den leaders Lisa Werner and Nicolette Bennett and several parents.
