Haskell optimistic about Senior Day

Time has not run out on Haskell Indian Nations University’s football season.

At least that’s the point HINU coach Eric Brock said he stressed to his players this week as the Fightin’ Indians (2-3) prepare for their final home game of the season, when they play host to Peru State today at Haskell Stadium.

More importantly for HINU fans, the time for today’s Senior Day game has not changed, despite some confusion. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

“I don’t know what happened or how the time got confused,” Brock said with a chuckle. “I guess since all our other games were at 2 p.m., people just thought this one would be too.

“But I can assure everyone that if they come to the stadium at 1:00, we’ll be there for them.”

The Indians are second in the Central States Football League in rushing offense with 778 yards, averaging more than 155 yards a game. The Indians have scored 11 times on the ground this year.

Problem is Haskell has scored just 13 times this season.

Peru State, however, has 20 touchdowns — 12 via the air, as the CSFL has been a pass-dominated league this season.

In HINU’s 28-21 setback to Southwestern Assemblies of God last week, QB Ryan Smith showed the pass-heavy tendencies of the league — earning co-offensive player of the week with his 17-of-36, 207-yard, two-touchdown performance.

The Indians do lead the league in total team defense, allowing 247.6 yards per game.

“You would think that being close to leading the league in rushing and defense that would correlate positively with wins,” he said. “But that isn’t exactly the case.

“It doesn’t really matter if we rush the ball up and down the field, or our defensive unit puts up the pat-you-on-the-back kind of numbers, we need to get W’s in the win column.”

Brock said a group of seven fired-up seniors (Brett Blythe, Ben Baker, Cory Deer, Tim Holt, Gabe Minthorn, Dewey McLaughlin, and Kiah Smith) would set the tone for the team and try to get one last victory before Haskell headed on the road for its final three games.

“We just need to come out and perform at the top of our game,” Brock said. “We’re prepared and confident that we can do well in our last home game.

“But we need to do that and make a statement for the rest of the season.”
