Chieftains outlast Mill Valley

? In a showing of two high-powered football offenses, Tonganoxie High had a few more weapons — and a quicker defense — to outlast Mill Valley, 20-10, Friday night.

In a game where only 15 passing plays were called by both squads, the Chieftains had four players rack up considerable running yards; the Jaguars had one.

“I think we proved today that we don’t have to live by the big play,” Tongie senior running back Billy Baska said. “We can play old-fashioned football, up the gut, right up the middle.”

That they did, time and again.

Baska ran for 110 yards off 14 carries, but was second in yards behind senior quarterback Justin Walker, who finished with 119 yards. Sophomore B.J. Flemming and senior Tim Hopkins rounded out the stable in the backfield, both finishing with more than 40 yards.

Walker was 5-for-6 passing, including one pass to senior receiver Shane Howard with a little more than four minutes to play in the fourth quarter in a crucial play that secured a Chieftain first down.

“Our passing game didn’t work for us,” Baska said. “We stuck by our guns, and our guns have always been running the ball.”

Three plays later, Baska went on a 31-yard scamper straight down the field to give his squad a 14-10 edge.

Tongie iced the game after Walker galloped 56 yards for a TD with a minute left.

The Jaguars (3-3) also were run-happy, resting nearly all of the workload on the shoulders of David Woods. The junior had 123 yards on 23 carries, but Tongie stopped him and the Mill Valley offense when it needed to.

Tonganoxie coach Mark Elston said the key was stopping Woods’ “big-play ability.”

“Our defense was tired of chasing him, so we wanted to keep the ball and dictate the pace of the game,” Elston said. “He’s one of the better backs in the area.”

Mill Valley sophomore quarterback Josh Sims went 4-for-9 for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception. After Sims hit senior receiver Rickey Wilson for an 85-yard touchdown pass, the Jaguars had a 10-7 lead on the Chieftains.

Then Walker and his taller, bigger crew stepped up and ran by Mill Valley for two late fourth-quarter scores.

“It was a dogfight to the very end,” Walker said. “Our seniors stepped up in the end and got the ‘W.'”

Tongie is 6-0 for the first time since 1962.

“It’s awesome,” Baska said. “It’s one of the greatest feelings in the world.”

The Chieftains will play host Friday to Kansas City Piper.
