Longtime House member has surgery on stent

Rep. John Dingell, 77, the longest-serving House member, was recovering Friday after undergoing surgery to replace a stent in an artery, his office said.

Dingell, D-Mich., had the stent inserted in May to open a blocked artery. During a follow-up examination, doctors noticed the stent was narrowing and decided to replace it.

Capitol Physician Dr. Bruce Clemons said Friday that Dingell’s heart was healthy, according to a statement from the congressman’s office. Dingell was expected to remain overnight at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland and be released today.

Dingell began serving in the House in 1955.

L.A. Times subscribers cancel for recall stories

The Los Angeles Times has received more than 1,000 phone complaints and a similar number of cancellations for its reports that Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger allegedly groped or humiliated women over the last three decades.

A thousand readers canceled their subscriptions between Oct. 2, when the first of several articles appeared, and Oct. 4, spokeswoman Martha Goldstein said. Even more have canceled since then, but Goldstein would not say how many.

The cancellations likely made only a small dent in the Times’ overall weekday circulation, which is about 1 million, according to March Audit Bureau of Circulations numbers. Sunday circulation is more than 1.3 million.
