Shots fired outside downtown bar

One KU student’s night on the town turned into “mass chaos” early Sunday after gunshots rang out outside a downtown Lawrence bar.

Katie Van Thournout was one of dozens of people standing outside Brother’s, 1105 Mass., around 1:45 a.m. when the bullets flew.

“Everyone just dropped to the floor, and then a thing ricocheted and hit my lip. Everyone was on the floor (ground) and then there was mass chaos,” Van Thournout said.

According to Lawrence police Sgt. Susan Hadl, a light skinned black or Hispanic male shot into the ground five to eight times with a handgun and proceeded to walk south along Massachusetts Street.

“Two people are being seen at the hospital, and we’ve talked to five to seven others who were struck by ricocheting bullets and/or pavement matter,” Hadl said.

As of early this morning police were still searching for the alleged gunman, interviewing witnesses and trying to determine a motive.
