Wilson takes 5th; LHS golf ties for 7th

Competing in her first 18-hole tournament of the season, Lawrence High sophomore Sydney Wilson tied for fifth Thursday at the Washburn Rural Invitational.

Wilson shot an 85 to tie Manhattan’s Emily Houtze for fifth.

Roeland Park Miege’s Michelle Reagan won with a 75.

“Since we hadn’t played an 18-hole tournament, we wanted to get an 18-hole tournament under our belt and treat this as a practice round in preparation for league on Monday,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said, noting earlier tournaments scheduled for 18 holes had been canceled or shorted to nine holes. “So we were pleased. Sydney definitely is our team leader.

“She wasn’t happy with an 85. In my opinion, it was good for her on a day like today. She definitely can play with the girls who won the tournament. She kind of had an up-and-down day. Nothing really stood out as terribly bad.”

LHS tied Shawnee Heights for seventh in the team race with 412 strokes.

The Lions will travel to the Sunflower League Monday at Meadowbrook Country Club in Overland Park.
