Diver drowns searching for missing soldier in Iraq

? A military diver involved in the search for a soldier who drowned in western Baghdad was found dead Tuesday, 10 hours after he went missing, the U.S. military said.

The diver, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, failed to resurface after combing a canal near the Abu Ghraib prison for a submerged Humvee, according to the U.S. Central Command.

The Humvee, carrying three soldiers from the 800th Military Police Brigade, was part of a four-vehicle convoy responding to a reported mortar attack near the prison. The vehicle made a turn and flipped into the water at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday. Two soldiers swam to safety but the third remained trapped in the submerged vehicle, the military said.

A diving team searched for nearly five hours and pulled out the body of the drowned soldier at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. But one of the divers failed to resurface. The divers continued searching for their colleague until his body was pulled out at 12:55 p.m., the military said.
