Oklahoma State rips Colorado State, 82-49

Cowboys force 31 turnovers

? Oklahoma State’s defense keeps bailing out its sloppy offense.

John Lucas scored 17 points and the No. 24 Cowboys forced 31 turnovers in their 82-49 victory Wednesday night over Colorado State.

Oklahoma State scored 27 of the game’s final 33 points and didn’t allow a basket in the last 12:21. The Cowboys (2-0) had 10 steals, blocked eight shots and drew six charges.

“The story was our defense,” coach Eddie Sutton said. “We made it awfully difficult for them to run their offense.”

Joey Graham added 12 points for Oklahoma State, which improved to 15-1 in games played at Oral Roberts’ Mabee Center under Sutton.

Matt Nelson led Colorado State (1-1) with 14 points. The Rams, an NCAA tournament team a year ago, shot just 31.8 percent.

The Rams pulled to 55-43 with 10:36 remaining on single free throws by Nelson and Freddy Robinson. They capped an 8-2 run Colorado State used to cut into a 53-35 lead.

But Oklahoma State went on a 24-1 sprint helped by six straight Rams turnovers. Ivan McFarlin had five points — all from the line — and Lucas and Graham four points each in the run.

“We just did not have good chemistry, and this is what happens,” Rams coach Dale Layer said. “Turnovers are killers. You have guys trying to do too many things.”
