UNC thumps Davidson

? Playing almost three hours away from home in Davidson’s backyard, No. 9 North Carolina felt right at home.

The Tar Heels faithful turned out en masse to see new coach Roy Williams make his first appearance in Charlotte, and No. 9 North Carolina routed Davidson, 91-68, Monday night.

“We had a lot of people here and it really surprised me,” said Jawad Williams, who scored a career-high 28 points. “People want to see good basketball and coach Williams is going to teach good basketball, so they come to see that.”

Sean May scored 19 points, Rashad McCants had 13 and Melvin Scott added 12 for North Carolina (2-0).

Raymond Felton added 12 assists for the Tar Heels, who had few problems with Davidson (0-2).

No. 4 Arizona 107, Northern Arizona 73

Tucson, Ariz. — Channing Frye scored 20 points and Andre Iguodala added 18 to give coach Lute Olson his 500th victory with the Wildcats.

Isaiah Fox had his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman point guard Mustafa Shakur had 14 points in his college debut for the Wildcats.

Kodiak Yazzie scored 16 points to lead the Lumberjacks.

No. 16 Gonzaga 90, Denver 58

Spokane, Wash. — Ronny Turiaf scored 21 points to lead Gonzaga. Gonzaga (2-1) used a 23-6 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Pioneers. They outscored Denver 45-23 in the second half.

No. 19 Cincinnati 89, Oakland (Mich.) 60

Cincinnati — Jason Maxiell scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Bearcats (2-0). Oakland (2-3) shot only 32 percent from the field with 13 turnovers as it fell behind by 27 points in the first half.

No. 21 Notre Dame 74, Northern Illinois 65

South Bend, Ind. — Torin Francis had 24 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots and the Irish held off a late charge.

No. 23 Marquette 70, Northern Michigan 58

Milwaukee — Travis Diener scored 15 points and Steve Novak chipped in with 14 for the Golden Eagles (4-0). Scott Merritt added 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Division II Wildcats (2-1) played a solid game, and were led by Ricky Volcy’s 14 points.
