LMH nurse honored

A Lawrence Memorial Hospital nurse was among the honorees this month at the 13th annual “Nursing: The Heart of Healthcare” awards banquet at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

Teresa Sikes, director of LMH’s Palliative Care Program-Skilled Nursing Facility, was among 10 winners selected from Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area. More than 300 area nurses were nominated for the award, which recognizes nurses’ contributions to their communities, patients and profession.

The list also included three graduates of the KU school of nursing — Jenny West, infectious diseases nurse clinician at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.; Beth Clark, nurse manager at the University of Kansas Hospital; and Britny Sutulovich, case manager at NorthCare Hospice in North Kansas City, Mo.

Soldier seeks letters from area residents

Chances are you don’t know Tyler Springstead, but he’d like to hear from you.

“He’s in the Army infantry; stationed in Baghdad,” said David Hann, a Lawrence resident who is a friend of Springstead’s aunt.

“He’s setting up checkpoints on bridges,” Hann said. “My friend says he would just like to hear from people who live in a world that’s normal.”

Hann said Springstead, from St. Louis, recently celebrated his 21st birthday in Baghdad, Iraq.

“He and his buddies are looking for a little normalcy, that’s all,” Hann said.
