Indoor pool to close Wednesday, Thursday

The Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be closed Wednesday because of a scheduled power outage.

The center also will be closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday. It will reopen Friday under holiday hours. The lap pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., and the leisure pool will be open from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

The center will reopen Saturday under normal hours.

District seeking ideas for online charter school

The Lawrence school district is seeking community input on development of a “virtual” charter school.

School board members authorized district staff to prepare an application for state funding to run an online educational program for students who are homebound or enrolled in nonaccredited private schools.

Tentative plans are to provide instruction at a charter school to students in third through eighth grades. Courses in reading, writing, math, social studies and science would be aligned with state academic standards.

People with thoughts about planning and design of the virtual charter school can send comments to virtual.school@usd497.org.

Last week, the school board requested staff to prepare a draft of the grant proposal by Dec. 1. It must be submitted to the Kansas Department of Education by Feb. 1.

If funding is secured from the state, the first students would enroll in 2005.
