Patriots not blind

To the editor:

Those of us who are sickened and angered by the blatant abuse of power, the total disregard for international protocol and the engagement of our military in this senseless war are in no way protesting against our troops. These courageous young people are being used by the government in a way that shows total disregard for their dedication, sense of duty, and their very lives.

We who disagree with Bush’s imperialistic display of nationalism have more respect for the honor of our military personnel than those who accept these pre-eminent actions of war and jump on the bandwagon, waving the flag in the name of “America, right or wrong.”

Another point of interest is the reaction that is being more commonly heard that the American public was somehow “duped” into supporting this war by an overzealous administration. In fact, there have been no surprises in the turn of events since the engagement of our military in Iraq. At no time was a justifiable case made for these actions. Citizens are obligated to be aware of what our elected officials are doing in our names.

It is not admirable to apathetically stand by, trusting those in power to make the right decisions. Just as it is their responsibility to inform, serve and make policy that is in the public’s best interest, it is our responsibility to listen, read and monitor those who serve us and to speak out when their actions are unacceptable. Patriotism is not blind!
