Perry Ump Honored: Dean Sage of Perry has been named regional umpire of the year by the American Amateur Baseball Congress. States in the region are Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. Sage also is a member of the Kansas AABC board of directors.

  • Conroy Nabs Finale: Randy Conroy shot a 77 and won the final Jayhawk Golf Club tournament of the year Saturday at Alvamar. Van Reichert, Chris Conroy and Larry Whiteley all shot 79s. In net scoring, Jeff Miller and Pete Whitenight carded 71s and Keith Wallace had a 72.

  • Stella Honored: Grinnell College senior Cathy Stella, a Free State High graduate, has been named to the second team of the All-Midwest Conference volleyball team for the second year in a row. Stella finished her Grinnell career in second place on the school’s all-time blocks list.

  • Chadwick Selected: Williams College junior Joyia Chadwick, a Free State High graduate, has been named to the All-NESCAC volleyball team for the third straight year. Chadwick led the conference in blocks and was among the league leaders in hitting percentage and kills per game.

  • Raiders Coach: Reggie Christiansen, a volunteer coach on Kansas University’s baseball staff, also will coach the Lawrence Raiders under-18 American Legion baseball team next summer. Christiansen has been a head coach at the high school, college and Legion level in California. Christiansen replaces Carl Brooks, who retired.
