Philip Marion Smith

Graveside services for Philip Marion Smith, 55, Memphis, Tenn., will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at his home.

He was born Aug. 9, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Marion R. and Ruby Elizabeth (Rogers) Smith. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1966 and received bachelor’s degrees in music and music education, and a master’s degree in musicology from Kansas University. He received a master’s degree in library science and a doctorate in humanities from Florida State University, then moved to Memphis.

Mr. Smith was a librarian in Memphis and had been head of cataloging and library systems at University of Memphis. He was active in the library community and served on several committees of the American Library Assn. He was a member of Lawrence Lodge No. 6 A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite Temple.

Survivors include a sister, Linda Winters, La Crescenta, Calif.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas University Libraries, sent in care of the funeral home.
