Geography symposium at KU open to public

Experts in the field of geographic information systems will gather Wednesday at Kansas University for a GIS Day Symposium.

The events, which are free and open to the public, run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lindley Hall.

Speakers include John Kelmelis, chief scientist for geography with the U.S. Geological Survey, and Jerry Curtis, public health adviser with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cougar Challenge to be run Saturday

South Junior High School on Saturday will play host to an annual fund-raising event in honor of a former teacher.

The Carol Church Cougar Challenge brings past, present and future South students, parents and staff together for a 1.8-mile walk/run race.

The activity promotes cardiovascular family fitness and is staged in memory of Church, who taught physical education at South for 27 years until retiring in 1995.

Registration is from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. The race starts at 2 p.m. on the outdoor track at South, 2734 La.

Entry fee for the race is a canned food item, which will be donated to the Emergency Services Council at the Salvation Army.

Past KU vice chancellor up for post in San Jose

A former Kansas University administrator is a finalist for the president’s position at San Jose State University.

Judith A. Ramaley, executive vice chancellor at KU from 1987 to 1990, is one of three finalists for the position.

The other two are Gregory M. St. L. O’Brien, chancellor at the University of New Orleans, and Sheila I. Kaplan, who resigned in June after a decade as president of Metropolitan State College in Denver.

Ramaley also has served as president of the University of Vermont and Portland State University.

She is associate director of education and human resources for the National Science Foundation.

Bowling fund-raiser to benefit child center

A group of communication studies students at Kansas University has organized a bowling tournament Sunday to benefit Brookcreek Learning Center.

Bowling for Brookcreek will be from noon to 4 p.m. at JayBowl in the Kansas Union. Up to 24 four-member teams will be allowed to sign up for $25 per team, which includes two games each and shoe rental.

Money will be accepted at the door. Several local restaurants and stores will provide refreshments and prizes.

The planning committee consists of students from the communication studies department and the Problem Solving in Teams and Groups class.
