BB gun vandals leave trail of shattered glass

Police think they know who shooters are

There have been no arrests, but police say they think they know the three teens responsible for a BB gun shooting spree that damaged windows of at least two businesses and 21 vehicles across Lawrence.

“I was really upset. I started crying because I just can’t afford it right now,” said Lisa Graham, who had the rear window of her Chevrolet Blazer destroyed late Monday.

Graham, who lives in Sunrise Village apartments, 660 Gateway Court, said she was facing a bill of between $600 and $1,200 to repair the window, which was shattered in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Her auto insurance policy requires her to pay a $500 deductible.

Police said they identified the suspects — an 18-year-old male, a 17-year old male and a 17-year-old female, all from the Lawrence area — after their vehicle struck a utility pole about 11:50 p.m. Monday near Monterey Way and Peterson Road.

Officers who responded to the accident found a BB gun inside the vehicle, but the suspects have not yet been arrested, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department.

Pattrick said he expected more reports of vandalism would surface today.

The two businesses that reported broken windows were on opposite ends of the city: the Liz Claiborne outlet, 1035 N. Third St., and JCPenney, 3311 Iowa. Car-window shootings happened in all parts of Lawrence — from the 2000 block of East 19th Street to business parking lots near Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

  • In another vandalism case, police have not yet reviewed a hotel-surveillance tape that might yield clues about who punctured roughly two dozen Nebraska football fans’ auto tires before Saturday’s Kansas-Nebraska game. That review likely will happen today when an officer who’s working the case returns to duty, Pattrick said.
