Accidental shooting leaves hunter dead

A Fredonia man died Saturday — the first day of pheasant hunting season — when he was accidentally shot in the stomach.

The man, whose name was not released, was injured as he hunted near the Harper-Sumner county line, said Val Jansen of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. A friend drove the wounded hunter to Argonia, and he was flown to a Wichita hospital, where he died, Jansen said.

Jansen said the man was either putting his gun into a truck or taking it out when it fired.

Guard squadron gets $7.4 million for building

The Kansas National Guard’s 161st Intelligence Squadron will get $7.4 million from the federal government for a building at McConnell Air Force Base.

The appropriation from Congress also will pay to modify an existing facility for operations until the new building is constructed.

“We’re very excited about the support in Congress for the military construction for the new mission,” said Col. Gene Martin, vice commander of the 184th Air Refueling Wing.
