Mary M. Powell

? Services for Mary M. Powell, 77, Lecompton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Perry American Legion Building. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton.

Mrs. Powell died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at her home.

She was born March 13, 1926, in Topeka, the daughter of Englebert Joseph and Rose Walter. She grew up in the Lecompton community and graduated from Lecompton High School in 1944. She graduated from Kansas University in 1949 with a degree in elementary education.

Mrs. Powell taught in Frankfort and at Star Elementary School in rural Lecompton until 1951. She worked for Hallmark Cards for 38 years until she retired in 1992. She then volunteered in the Lecompton community and at Lecompton United Methodist Church. She was a member of Lecompton United Methodist Church, Lecompton Historical Society, Golden Rods and H & R Group.

She married Gerald Franklin Powell on Dec. 31, 1950, in Topeka. He died March 1, 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Powell and Gary Powell, both of Lecompton; a daughter, Roxie Sumner, Lecompton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to Lecompton Historical Society or Lecompton Fire Department, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
