Lakers outlast San Antonio

L.A. claims 120-117 victory in double overtime

? The Lakers are still undefeated, though it took massive efforts from Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to get them past the injury-ravaged San Antonio Spurs, 120-117, in double overtime Thursday night.

Bryant scored 37 after taking an embarrassing fall in the third quarter, and O’Neal had 35 points, 20 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots as Los Angeles improved the league’s best record to 5-0.

San Antonio was without injured starters Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, yet the defending champions got a career-high 33 points from Manu Ginobili. Five others reached double figures to push the game into two extra periods before it finally ended more than 31/2 hours after it began.

With most fans standing to watch the final moments of the fourth quarter and much of the two overtimes, the nationally televised game was riveting theater in a matchup of two of the West’s biggest rivals.

San Antonio ousted the Lakers from the playoffs last spring and ended their three-year run as champions, and this was the Spurs’ chance to put the first blemish on the retooled Lakers’ record.

Despite being so short-handed, they nearly did it.

Bryant shot 16-for-29 and added five rebounds and four steals, while O’Neal was 12-for-23 from the field and 11-for-16 at the foul line. His two free throws with 16.9 seconds left broke the last of 16 ties.

Karl Malone added 15 points and 19 rebounds before fouling out, while Gary Payton had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Four players — Malone, Devean George, Malik Rose and Rasho Nesterovic — fouled out.

San Antonio's Rasho Nesterovic, left, and Los Angeles' Shaquille O'Neal contest a rebound. The Lakers defeated the Spurs, 120-117, in double overtime Thursday night in San Antonio. O'Neal had 35 points, 20 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots.

Pacers 87, Nets 81

East Rutherford, N.J. — Former Net Anthony Johnson held off a late New Jersey rally with two straight three-pointers and Indiana won its third straight game.

Ron Artest had 21 points, Johnson added 17 and Jermaine O’Neal had 15 for the Pacers who saw a 19-point third-quarter lead shrink to two points with just under four minutes left.

Kerry Kittles had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Nets, who struggled with their shooting for the second straight game. Richard Jefferson added 18, and Aaron Williams had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Kidd finished with 10 points and eight assists after a 4-for-13 shooting night.

The Pacers opened a 59-41 lead with a 37-16 run that bridged the closing minutes of the second quarter and first seven of the third.

Raptors 77, Mavericks 71

Toronto — Vince Carter had 19 points and Toronto held Dallas to its lowest-scoring game in nearly six years.

Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 27 points, but had just four in the second half. It was the fewest points the Mavericks have scored in a game since they were held to 67 in a loss to the New York Knicks Dec. 22, 1997.

Antonio Davis had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Morris Peterson added 12 points for the Raptors, who rebounded from the lowest-scoring game in franchise history. Minnesota beat Toronto, 73-56, last Saturday.

Antoine Walker had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Mavericks, but also committed nine turnovers.
