Brownback says U.S. must renew space goals

Washington — U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., on Thursday said the United States must renew its commitment to space exploration and “embrace the idea of dominating the orbits of Earth, moon and Mars.”

Brownback, chairman of a Senate subcommittee on science, technology and space, conducted a hearing to discuss space exploration.

He said setbacks in the space program had the United States “a bit lost in space.”

He said the country needed a vision for what to do in space. He said he would examine all operations, including missions to the moon and Mars, the International Space Station and the space shuttle.

Land purchase approved for training center

Topeka — A legislative committee Thursday gave Kansas University permission to spend about $417,000 to buy land and a building to expand the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, south of Hutchinson.

KU says it needs to purchase the space and building because the center has become overcrowded.

The parcel, adjacent to the training center, includes 11 acres of land and a 20,000-square-foot building.
