Jayhawks’ Smith, Miller honored

Caroline Smith, the most prolific scorer in Kansas University soccer history, has been named to the All-Big 12 Conference team by league coaches. Also named to the first team was KU goalie Meghan Miller.

Freshman defender Holly Gault earned second-team honors.

Smith, a sophomore from Edina, Minn., leads the Big 12 in four offensive categories and is KU’s all-time leading scorer with 30 goals. She has 18 goals this season.

Miller was one of two goalkeepers named to the first team. A junior from Seattle, Wash., Miller is tied for the Big 12 lead with nine shutouts and boasts a career goals-against average of 1.17, ranking first on the KU career chart.

Gault, a freshman from Spring Hill, was named to the second team as a defender as well as to the all-newcomer team.

Smith and Miller also earned academic all-Big 12 honors, league officials announced Tuesday.

Smith, senior goalkeeper Sarah Gonzalez, senior defender Maggie Mason, junior forward Monica Brothers, junior forward Rachel Gilfillan, junior defender Stacy Leeper, junior midfielder Lauren Williams and sophomore forward Kimberly Karfonta were named to the first team.

Junior midfielder Amy Geha and Miller both were second-team selections.

Kansas will travel Thursday to San Antonio for the conference tournament. The third-seeded Jayhawks will face No. 6 Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. in Blossom Soccer Stadium.
