Local poets to read from latest collections

Two Lawrence poets will read from and sign copies of their most recent publications 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Denise Low found inspiration for “Thailand Journal” during a summer spent in Thailand with her son. The collection immerses the reader in the sensual world that the poet experienced. Low’s poems have appeared in many publications, and she has written and edited several volumes of poetry. She teaches creative writing and American Indian studies at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Silvia Kofler’s first book, “From the Suburbs with the Wedding Dress in Its Coffin,” contains a collection of poems, each written in both German and English. Kofler was born in Graz, Austria, and moved to Kansas City in 1979. Kofler is editor/publisher of Thorny Locust, and her work has appeared in numerous publications. She teaches at Kansas University.

Both books will be available to purchase at the event, which is sponsored by I-70 Review.

Oread Books event features KU author

Oread Books continues its Local Authors Series with an appearance by James C. Cisneros, author of “Moccasins, Money and Murder.”

Cisneros, a Kansas University student, will read from and sign copies of the book — a fictionalized account of conflict and cultural change he experienced within the Kickapoo nation — from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

During his service as treasurer of the tribal council, his attempts to expose what he saw as financial improprieties connected with Indian gaming resulted in his removal from office and the reservation in Horton. A movie screenplay is under way.

Cisneros graduated from Haskell Indian Junior College in 1982, attended universities in California, and has worked for several tribes in California and Kansas, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and three major banks. He is also the founder of the Native American Junior Golf Assn. in Mayetta.

The book will be available for purchase and signing.
