Mason McCurdy, past president of Chapter 2 of Tamagonit Lodge 147, attended the Order of the Arrow section conclave Oct. 10-12. Blackhawk Lodge 67 played host to the event at the Saukenauk Scout Reservation near Quincy, Ill. The section consists of lodges from eastern Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Scouts discussed leadership, learning and fellowship. Mason is a member of Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the First Methodist Church of Lawrence.

• Pelathe District had its annual fall Camporee Oct. 24-26 at Camp Bromelsick. There were 126 Scouts, 43 adult leaders and 28 support staff and commissioners in attendance. Participating troops were 52, 53, 55, 56, 59, 61, 64 and 65 and Venturing Crew 2052.

The theme of the campout was the “Siege of Mafeking,” which took place during the Boer War, 1899-1900. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Worldwide Boy Scout movement, was the commander of the British forces defending Mafeking.

The Scouts participated in nine events. Here are the events and the winners:

Choose a Path, Troop 59, UFO; Captured Guerrilla Prisoner, Troop 59, UFO; Blinded Patrol, Troop 55, Cobras; Wounded Comrades, Crew 2052, Dudettes; Curare Ground, Troop 64, Rebels; Searchlight Minefield, Troop 59, Woodchucks; Silent Approach, Troop 61, Black Dragons; Message Relay, Troop 52; Gators and Enemy Camp, Troop 55, Cougars. It was the first time that Camporee events took place at night.

• Phillip Wrigley, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, will be honored at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the church for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Phillip joined Cub Scout Pack 3053 in 1994 and received his Arrow of Light in 1997 before joining Troop 59. He attended summer camp at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation in Osceola, Mo., for five years until he became a member of the camp staff as an aquatics instructor for the past two years. He has earned 27 merit badges and his bronze palm.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Phillip planned and led the construction of a 66-foot wave fence and arbor gate to enclose the nature garden on the playground at Hilltop Child Development Center at Kansas University.

Phillip is an Ordeal member in the Order of the Arrow and a Runner in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 28.

He has served as patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader and junior assistant Scoutmaster. He currently is an assistant Scoutmaster.

He has attended the high adventure programs at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2000, Northern Tier Boundary Waters in 1999 and 2001 and Scouts Canada Jamboree on Prince Edward Island in 2001.

Phillip will graduate from Lawrence High School in May 2004. He plans to attend Kansas University in the fall.
