Club news

The Betty Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met May 17 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Margaret Wulfkuhle, vice regent, showed the film “The Indian Youth of America.”

The chapter was recognized by the State of Kansas DAR. The chapter received certificates for membership growth, community service and outstanding achievement in service to veterans.

The chapter made a donation to the Douglas County Memorial Foundation. The following members received certificates and flag pins: Margaret Wulfkuhle, Fay Talley, Darlene Slapar, Wilma Baruth, Jody Woodward, Phyllis Bell, Hilde Farley and Pauline Mellies.

It was announced that DAR ROTC medals had been presented to Cadet David Holbrooks, Lawrence; and Nicole Cole, Virginia.

Regent Annie Merriam installed the following officers for 2003-2004: Polly Reed, regent; Mary Lynn Stuart, vice regent; Patricia Koehler, chaplain; Joan Scannell, recording secretary; Linda Lowdermilk, corresponding secretary; Stacy Cope, treasurer; and Mary Burchill, historian.

Polly Reed presented the past regents pin to Annie Merriam.

The next meeting will be in September.

The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met May 21 for its weekly game. The Stratified game attracted nine pairs and used a Howell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Al Ballard and Emily Foster claimed first place in A, B and C. Artie Shaw and Dan Osman finished second in A, B and C. Lynn Hui and Jo Abbott took third place in A and B.

The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met May 23 for its weekly competition. The Stratified game attracted eight tables and used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Competing North-South, Frances Vogel and Erna Holmes finished in first. Clyde Romer and Kent McCullough took second place. Shirley Reese and Wanda Durbin placed third. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd placed first in B. Don Brennaman and Lynn Hui placed first in C.

Sitting East-West, Jim Gunn and Harry Shaffer finished in first place. Dave Piro and Paul Heitzman placed second. Judy Bevan and Linda Heavin placed third in A and first in B and C. Cathy Blumenfeld and Mike Blumenfeld came in second place in B.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday for its weekly game. The game attracted eight tables, was Stratified and used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Playing North-South, Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough claimed first place. Jiambo Zhang and Harry Shaffer placed second in A and first in B. Olivier Urruty and Don Brenaman took third place in A, second place in B and first place in C. Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee finished third in B.

Sitting East-West, Meredith Docking and Judy Bevan claimed first place in A and B. Cathy Blumenfeld and Mike Blumenfeld placed second in A and B and first in C. Jerry Sloan and Patt Radford finished third in A.
